““To choose becoming a servant in the court of the queen of arts - music - means to shoulder a multitude of responsibilities, which Sorina Rotaru has fully embraced, as evidenced by this debut album of hers that fills me with such admiration that I cannot help but exclaim from the bottom of my heart: "EXCELSIOR!" ” - Liviu Prossi, composer
Band bio
Sorina Georgiana Rotaru is an exceptional representative of the young generation of Romanian jazz singers. She says, "I climbed stairs, cliffs, stepped on surrenders and gentle bodies, rose on rhymes and leaves, stood up on high heels and barefoot walked on waters. Climbed all the way up to that time called the Present. I stopped. Looked over my shoulder as the whirl of emotions, of feelings, of bashful, bright, miraculous steps unravelled before me, turned before my very eyes into wings, and the wings became music. We are all here and now, loving and nothing more. Open your wings!"
Sorina is from Craiova and graduated from the National University of Arts in Bucharest. She has a master's degree in jazz composition from the National University of Music in Bucharest. She is a jazz vocalist who released her first album, "Open Your Wings," in 2022. It features a selection of nine representative jazz pieces, written by composers such as Cole Porter and George Gershwin, and rearranged by the musicians she collaborated with, namely Alexandru Olteanu, Andrea Caruso, and Iulian Nicolau. Sorina's professional path has involved a lot of study, rehearsals, and singing technique lessons. "Music makes me a different person. It's with me when my heart is effervescent, when it dissolves in some drama, when loneliness settles in my lap, when I open my laptop or pick up the turntable," says the artist, who the press says, “she has the chance to join the legendary axis Of native Romanian jazz, born from Aura Urziceanu's practice continued by Anca Parghel's grace and now alive in present days with Luiza Zan and Nadia Trohin's embrace”.
Together with Alexandru Olteanu, she launched the musical project "Human Song". It is an innovative idea of musical gifts inspired by people's life stories. Sorina writes the lyrics, and together with Alexandru, she composes the melodies that they perform in a special recording session. The muse receives their musical portrait in the form of this recording, along with their musical score framed in a painting.
Performances: Sophisticated Ladies by Bucharest Jazz Orchestra, Q&Q Brașov, Recitals performed at Tam Tam Festival, International Poetry Festival, 10th Edition, Brick Lane Festival, "Love Songs Naturally" by Mircea Tiberian, "Un*Fortunately, The Show Must Go On" by Mircea Tiberian and Maurice de Martin.
Currently, she keeps her passion for design alive by collaborating with the brand and creative studio Bon Bijou.
Alexandru Olteanu studied jazz composition at the National University of Music Bucharest and is one of the representative pianists/musicians of the new generation of jazz. Although his passion for improvisation led him towards jazz, he likes to include in his musical language ideas from classical music, especially "from the harmonic drama of the romantic current or the specific colored and descriptive harmonizations of impressionism". In 2012, he won the "Best Pianist Award" at the Student Jazz Festival in Târgu-Mureș, and in 2013, the Grand Prize at the Jazz Festival in Sibiu with the Blue Train trio. In recent years, he has mainly worked on instrumental vocal jazz projects, cultivating both his passion for creative accompaniment specific to the genre, and for solo jazz piano. He has accumulated thousands of hours of study, which has allowed him to access the subtle and profound aspects of music and the freedom of improvisation.
